Clarissa Explains Hashtags

By Clarissa Darling

Let’s face it, getting old is tough and it’s hard to keep up with the times.  My mom and stepfather think they are tech savvy just because they figured out how to text me.

Last night at dinner, mom asked me what a hashtag was. I put my head in my hands and quietly said “Ohhh Janet.”  My brother, Ferg-face, explained it to her.  Then I thought to myself, there are probably a lot of people that don’t know what a hashtag is.

So I’ll explain it all for you:

Here’s the less clinical definition: It’s a way to group an idea on Facebook and Twitter.
You “hashtag” a word or a group of words by putting a pound sign in front of the word(s). Example: #ClarissaExplainsItAll.  If you click on that group of words, it will show you everyone else in the world talking about me (Clarissa, duh!)  Try it.  Put a hashtag in front of birthday when you are wishing someone a #HappyBirthday. But please use it sparingly. Overuse is annoying. For real.
So there you go!  If you have any questions, tweet at me @GayCoChicago.  On the other hand, if you didn’t know what a hashtag was, then you probs don’t know what Twitter is.
